Beautiful illumination of Flint Plaza
In spring 2021, Louis Poulsen introduces Christian Flint's new sculptural post-top, Flint Plaza, which blends design flexibility with contemporary aesthetics. With its modular build-up adjustable to suit the surrounding environment, the Flint Plaza is ideal for crafting scenic and large-scale lighting in tomorrow's public areas and landscapes.
Flint Plaza is the addition of the Flint family, created by award-winning Danish designer and architect Christian Flint in collaboration with Louis Poulsen. Flint Plaza is suitable for applications where grandiose, flexible, yet discreet illumination is required, and can be used in a wide range of applications such as public parks, urban squares, urban centers and coastal areas. With an aesthetic design and like other pieces in the Flint family, the product has a subtle sculptural look and is an effective accent in both modern and classic urban spaces.
"The key to Flint Plaza is to create open and beautiful ambient lighting, not only for safety and enough lighting to walk around and see things, but also to create scenes that are attractive and invite people to play and socialize outdoors. This is more important than ever for urban spaces and urban planning," says Kaspar Hammer, Director of Product & Design at Louis Poulsen.
Based on the same design language and basic ideas of the Flint family, one asymmetrical hollowed out section opens the door to light. This unique sculpture adds character to the luminaire and acts as a dimming reflector. It softens the light and directs the light exactly as needed, while making the light more comfortable in the dark.
This sculptural design motif was born in 2011. A sophisticated bollard was needed to illuminate the park adjacent to the exhibition at the art hall "Kunsthal Brænderigården" (now known as "Viborg Kunsthal") in Jutland, Denmark. It was so popular that Louis Poulsen decided to work with Christian Flint to further develop it. At the 2014 Light+ Building trade fair in Frankfurt, a version with optimized material quality, light distribution and efficiency was presented as the Flint bollard.
Weatherproof, simple aesthetics, functionality and soothing illumination, flint bollards have been a popular staple ever since. It elegantly decorates public spaces such as city parks during the day and makes them more accessible and safe at night.
Building on the success of the Flint Bollard, Flint Plaza adds a new addition to the Flint family of items that excel in height and scale and are suitable for applications that require spectacular illumination. To make full use of the flexible lighting design, the illumination can be adjusted vertically +/- 5° and horizontally 360° to enjoy different light distributions.
"In the Flint Plaza, we build the unit and direct the light, and even on the day of the final work, the module can still be adjusted and the angle of the light beam can be changed," says Kaspar Hammer.
Thanks to its modular design, the configuration can be freely varied, and up to four very flexible heads can be attached to one pole.
"To ensure that these environments are attractive to humans, it was important to create a modular system that could be used in the design process with lighting designers, specifiers, architects and planners," says Kaspar Hammer.
Glare-free light diffuses downward. The light source is hidden inside the top of the asymmetrical hollowed out area attached to the side of the post, and the gradient acts as a reflector to soften the light and cast an organic form on the ground.
The Flint Plaza has parts made of warm Corten steel or aluminum with textured faces. The textured finish not only allows visibility and graceful reflections, both in sunlight and artificial lighting, but also ensures durability in all use environments.
The Flint Garden bollard will be available in spring 2021.

About Christian Flint
Christian Flint (b. 1972), a lighting, furniture and industrial designer based in Copenhagen, is internationally acclaimed for his innovative and bold designs and experimental approach to new connections between people. Flint received a master's degree in architecture and design from the Aarhus School of Architecture in 2002 and founded his own design studio in 2003. Later, in 2006, we began collaborating with Louis Poulsen and have introduced the Flint 220 floor lamp, Flint 220 pendant, Flint 475 pendant, flint bollard, LP grand pendant and flintwall products. Many of his LED designs highlight Flint's talent for bridging the different disciplines of lighting and furniture design. Flint won the Bolig Magasinet Design Award for its Louis Poulsen Flint series and the Danish Energy and Electrical Authority's 2014 ELFORSK Award for its Flint Bollard.
