Living Room Lighting FAQ

What type of lighting is best for living rooms?

A living room is a multipurpose space that needs to suit different activities, from watching TV and hosting guests to folding laundry and reading. Its lighting needs are different from those of many other rooms in a home: Living room lighting should primarily be ambient, but it also needs to be one of the brightest rooms in the house.

Recessed can lighting, cove lighting, and chandeliers are ideal for this central space, as they provide comprehensive ambient lighting that doesn’t create unwanted shadows. Task lighting, such as a reading lamp or table lamp, should be kept to specific areas. Accent lighting is optional and best suited to shelf lighting and framing prominent art pieces.

How many light sources should a living room have?

Ideally, your living room lighting setup will produce about 20 lumens of light per square foot. How this is accomplished depends on the room’s layout and needs, but it’s best to have at least one overhead lighting solution complemented by one or two living room lamps each for both task lighting and ambient lighting.

Combining multiple sources of ambient lighting is recommended, as it creates a sense of fullness and coziness. Plus, it’s more practical, as it provides thorough lighting in all corners of the room. Overall, you’ll want a minimum of five light sources, though it’s common to have even more

How do I create cozy lighting in my living room?

The coziest rooms are those where illumination feels comprehensive, like it’s coming from everywhere, but without ever getting too bright. It also helps to have gentle, warm lighting to evoke a sense of calmness and comfort.

To accomplish this, you’ll want multiple ambient lighting sources. It’s best to choose lights with high lumens and add a dimmer switch to adjust to the ideal brightness level. Living room lamps with warm bulbs also help create a cozy atmosphere that’s designed for relaxation.
