About the PH Snowball

Poul Henningsen designed his first lights back in 1925/1926 for an exhibition in Paris. His work with Louis Poulsen continued right up until his death in 1967. Throughout his life, PH sought to create glare-free lighting; aiming to direct light where it was most needed, and creating soft shadows while using incandescent bulbs as a light source. Poul Henningsen designed Snowball in 1958 and it was exhibited together with PH 5 at the Danish Museum of Decorative Art. However, Snowball received no particular attention on this occasion, and was only re-launched and manufactured from 1983.

  • The fixture emits comfortable glare-free diffused light. Matte painted undersurfaces and glossy top surfaces result in an attractive reflection of the diffused light, creating uniform light distribution around the fixture. When the light is switched on, the top portion is illuminated while the bottom part remains dark.

Light source

E26 Socket: The PH Snowball is available with an E26 socket base for all colors, accommodating various light bulb types. This ensures compatibility with LED (including some smart bulbs) and incandescent bulbs (bulb not included).

Built-in LED: The PH Snowball in White can be ordered with a built-in LED light source, offering options of LED 3000K 44W or LED 3000-1800K D2W 44W.

Both the LED 3000K 44W and the LED 3000-1800K D2W 44W options offer seamless dimming control through -10V dimming or phase dimming. The dim-to-warm feature (D2W) allows for an exquisite adjustment of both brightness and warmth, creating an inviting and adaptable lighting ambiance.

Louis Poulsen recommends choosing a light source with a cooler light and a higher kelvin value (around 3000K) for reading and work settings. To create a cozy atmosphere, opt for a bulb with a warmer light and a lower kelvin value (around 2700K) or lower.

For further guidance, please refer to Louis Poulsen’s light bulb guide.

Danish design legacy

First unveiled in 1958; the PH Snowball remains a testament to Louis Poulsen's role in shaping modern lighting. Though initially overshadowed by the PH Artichoke and PH 5, its reintroduction in 1983 has seen it embraced as a symbol of Danish design legacy. Reflecting timeless elegance, it continues to inspire contemporary interiors with its innovative form and functional beauty.
