Timeless and classic, perfect for setting the mood in any location

In 2019, Louis Poulsen will introduce a new addition to the VL45 Radiohus pendant light collection. The 175 mm diameter complements the two existing sizes of 250 mm and 370 mm in diameter, and can be applied where they could not be used, creating endless potential for new interiors ready to add this popular classic.

In the 20s of the 40th century, the renowned Danish architect Vilhelm Lauritzen collaborated with Louis Poulsen to design the VL45 Radiohus chandelier for the newly built Danish broadcaster Radiohuset. However, the VL45 Radiohus pendant lamp was originally called an "Office Lamp".

The Office Lamp is very similar to the Studio Lamp, but not as complex as the latter, with two lampshades, a compact design and applied aerodynamics so as not to interrupt the ventilation in the stuffy studio, so that the musicians can continue practicing without distraction. The lamp also needed to combine the working light that the musician was shining precisely downwards with an overall softer, more diffuse, glare-free lighting.

Vilhelm Lauritzen solved this problem by using an elliptical mirror in the inner lampshade surrounded by opalescent glass on the outside. The VL45 Radiohus pendant lamp as we know it today retains the advantages of lighting as well as a warm, sophisticated look and feel, which is very much in line with the interior design trends of the moment.

All versions of the VL45 Radiohus pendant lamp are made of hand-blown unique creamy glossy glass and untreated brushed brass. No matter how big or small, whether they are hung individually or in groups, this collection of chandeliers can elevate a variety of interior styles in their own way.

The new size VL45 Radiohus pendant lamp (175 mm diameter) will be available in stores from September. The 9 mm diameter will also be available in an upgraded version with embedded LEDs.

About Vilhelm Lauritzen (1894–1984)

Vilhelm Lauritzen is one of the most important architects in Danish history, a pioneer of Danish functionalism. Many of his architectural works are microcosms of contemporary life, such as the Nørrebro Theatre (1931–1932), the Daells Varehus department store (1928–1935), the Radiohuset (1936–1941), and the first airport in Kestrup (1937–1939).

Famous buildings such as the Folkets Hus (1953 - 1956) are derived from Lauritzen's drawing tablets, and today they are more famous as the Vega Concert Hall, the Shellhuset (1950 - 1951) building and the Danish Embassy in Washington (1958 - 1960). In particular, the Radiohuset building and the original Kestup Airport are now among the best examples of European modernist architecture.
