Black PH Artichoke

In 2020, Louis Poulsen expanded the PH Artichoke collection with a black version. The perfect matte black finish of this pendant lamp provides a bold look for those who want a trimmed interior without compromising on design or light quality.

PH Artichoke's special form and craftsmanship ensure that no matter what angle it is viewed from, it is completely glare-free. This is a brief description from 1958, when Poul Henningsen was commissioned to design a chandelier for the Langelinie Pavilion, a modern restaurant in Copenhagen that still fascinates guests today. Today, it is internationally recognized as a design icon.

PH Artichoke's delicate lighting stems from the meticulously arranged 72 leaves that also give inspiration to the chandelier's name. The pendant lamp is still partially assembled by hand to ensure high quality. After all, it is the leaves that determine the extraordinary design of this chandelier.

That's right, PH Artichoke does need space. However, this pendant lamp also exhibits an equally elegant and eye-catching look and offers unmatched perfect lighting that can provide a very special atmosphere to any space. Still, sometimes something extra is needed – and that's exactly what the new PH Artichoke Black Edition offers.

The black PH Artichoke has a matte finish, and the black suspension lines and fixtures look more perfect from above. The underside of the matte black leaves is white, which ensures that the light is perfectly reflected. The black PH Artichoke comes with LED bulbs in four sizes (Ø480, Ø600, Ø720, Ø840) and will be available in-store from February 2020.

About Poul Henningsen

Poul Henningsen was born in Copenhagen to the famous Danish actress Agnes Henningsen. He never graduated as an architect, but studied at the Technical School in Friedrichsburg, Denmark, from 1911 to 1914, and then at the Technical Institute in Copenhagen from 1914 to 1917. He began to practice traditional functionalist architectural structures, but over the years his professional interests shifted to focus primarily on lighting, a field known to the world.

He also expanded his career to writing, becoming a journalist and writer. For a period in the early days of World War II, he was the chief architect of Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. However, like many other creative people, he was forced to flee Denmark during the German occupation, but soon became an important part of the Danish community of artists living in Sweden.

His lifelong collaboration with Louis Poulsen began in 1925 and lasted until his death. To this day, Louis Poulsen continues to benefit from his talent. Poul Henningsen was also the first editor of the company magazine "NYT". Sophus Kaastrup-Olsen, the CEO of Louis Poulsen at the time, gave the magazine as a gift to PH because he had been fired from the Danish newspaper he worked for (his views were too radical).

Poul Henningsen's pioneering work on the relationship between light structure, shadows, glare and color reproduction, in terms of the human need for light, remains the basis of Louis Poulsen's theory of illumination, which he still practiced.
