The history of Panthella
In the 1960s, Louis Poulsen began collaborating with Verner Panton, whose experimental approach to form and light challenged established conventions. Over several years, Panthella evolved as Panton explored materials, reflection, and color to achieve soft, atmospheric illumination.
The chrome version closely reflected his original vision. The high-luster chrome-plated finish expresses Verner Panton’s confident and forward-thinking character. At a time defined by muted interiors, chrome was a deliberate choice that questioned prevailing norms. Today, the finish resonates again as elements of 1970s design influence contemporary interiors.
Introduced in 1971, Panthella combined an organic silhouette with distinctive, glare-free illumination. The curved shade and trumpet-shaped base work together to reflect light softly and evenly. Panthella is widely regarded as a modern design icon.
Design heritage and craftsmanship
Panthella demonstrates Verner Panton’s ability to unite form, color, and function in a cohesive design. Since 1971, the lamp has remained part of Louis Poulsen’s collection and is today the only Verner Panton lighting design produced by Louis Poulsen.
The Flowerpot lamp, also designed by Verner Panton, is no longer part of the collection but holds recognized status as a modern design icon. Together, Flowerpot and Panthella represent complementary expressions within Panton’s design universe and underscore his lasting influence on Danish design with international reach.

For reading and focused tasks, a cooler light source around 3000K provides clearer, more functional illumination. A warmer light source of 2700K or lower creates a softer, more intimate atmosphere.
All models with E lampholders are compatible with LED light sources, including selected smart bulbs, as well as incandescent bulbs. Light source not included.
