Giving New Life to Familiar Fixtures

Making outdoor lighting greener does not have to mean losing classic designs or changing the look of the urban environment. LED upgrade kits offer cities the best of both worlds.

Good design can be timeless, but technology never stops moving. The conventional lamps that once dominated outdoor lighting have been superseded by LEDs, which last longer and use far less energy, enabling the carbon footprint of lighting to be drastically cut – in some cases by 80% or more.

As cities seek to harness the potential of LED lighting, what does the future hold for the existing designs that grace our public spaces – some of which dates long before LEDs were used in urban lighting. Off-the-shelf socket based retrofit lamps exist, but they can yield unpredictable results, and struggle to meet standards and requirements in terms of appearance, performance and lifetime. On the other hand, replacing fixtures entirely is a costly option that has a negative environmental impact – and means saying goodbye to timeless designs.

Real-world results

Icon was designed in 1999, and its minimal appearance, gentle glow and even illumination still make a strong impression. Like many other municipalities throughout the Nordic region and beyond, Rudersdal has always been very happy with Icon. But as the municipality works towards stretching sustainability targets, it has had to pay close attention to the energy consumed by outdoor lighting. For this reason, Rudersdal decided to bring Icon up to date using an LED upgrade kit from Louis Poulsen.

A greener future?

Louis Poulsen is now offering LED upgrade kits for more classic designs including post-tops like Albertslund and Kipp, as well as bollards and wall-mounted fixtures like Bysted, Toldbod and Skot. In each case, the light output of the upgraded LED versions closely matches the performance of the originals, but the improved efficiency enables energy savings of up to 86%, and payback times of just a few years.

From a sustainability point of view, it is not just lower energy consumption that makes LED upgrades appealing – it is also a chance to reduce waste by maximising the life of existing equipment. After all, these are products that were designed to last generations.
