The story of Panthella
In the 1960s, Louis Poulsen began collaborating with Verner Panton, whose uncompromising approach to light and form challenged conventional ideas of lighting. The development of Panthella evolved over several years, during which Verner Panton experimented with materials, light reflection and colour to achieve a soft, atmospheric quality of light.
The chrome version held particular significance for him. The high-lustre chrome-plated surface reflects Verner Panton’s bold and playful design approach. Chrome was a deliberate and confident choice at a time characterised by more restrained expressions, demonstrating his willingness to challenge prevailing norms. Today, this finish has regained relevance as the visual language of the 1970s once again influences contemporary interiors.
When Panthella was launched in 1971, the lamp united its organic silhouette with a distinctive, glare-free light designed to evoke imagination and sensory appeal. The characteristic shade and trumpet-shaped base reflect light softly and harmoniously. Today, Panthella is regarded by many design enthusiasts as a modern design icon.
Design heritage and quality
Panthella clearly expresses Verner Panton’s ability to unite form, colour and function in a coherent design. Since its introduction in 1971, the lamp has remained part of Louis Poulsen’s collection and is today the only Verner Panton lamp produced by Louis Poulsen.
The Flowerpot lamp, also designed by Verner Panton, is no longer part of the Louis Poulsen range, yet it has achieved recognition as a modern design icon. With its clear formal language and optimistic expression, Flowerpot and Panthella became symbols of a new era and a more open, experimental design culture. Together, they represent two sides of Verner Panton’s design universe and reflect his lasting influence on Danish design with international impact.

Louis Poulsen recommends a cooler light source with a higher Kelvin value (around 3000K) for reading and task-oriented activities, while a warmer light source (2700K or lower) creates a softer atmosphere.
All lamps with E-sockets are compatible with LED light sources (including selected smart bulbs) and incandescent bulbs (light source not included).
