About the AJ Floor Lamp

Arne Jacobsen designed this fixture, among many other features, for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, in 1957. The floor lamp yields a pleasant downward directed light with its white painted inner shade. Furthermore, the shade can be tilted to adjust light distribution.

The AJ lamp family is considered to be the design Jacobsen is most famous for worldwide. Apart from the AJ Floor, the AJ family consisted of a table lamp too, a smaller table lamp, a wall lamp as well as a table mounted lamp that were all to be found around the SAS Royal Hotel after its inauguration in 1960.

The clean distinguished shape of the AJ lamp with its immaculate light could be seen all around the hotel in copper and stainless steel. Together with the AJ Royal, the AJ lamp family was part of the overall design concept, which Jacobsen had created for the hotel. He practically designed everything himself. The parallels between the straight lines and the combination of straight and curved angles in the AJ lamp design are also visible in the geometric contours of his buildings.

Light source

E27 socket: compatible with a range of lightbulbs, including LED (smart bulbs included) and incandescent bulbs (bulb not included).

For reading: Opt for a bulb with a cooler tone and a higher kelvin value (around 3000K) for clarity and focus.
For ambience: A warmer light with a lower kelvin value (around 2700K) creates a cosier atmosphere.

Simple care

To maintain the AJ Floor Lamp’s refined finish, use a dry microfibre cloth for regular cleaning. For materials such as copper or stainless steel, avoid damp cloths to prevent patination.

Arne Jacobsen

Arne Jacobsen was born and raised in Copenhagen. In 1927, he graduated as an architect from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. After graduating, he obtained his first job at the office of the City Architect of Copenhagen launching his own office only two years later.
