Panthella lends itself naturally to the dining room, living room and bedroom. In the dining room, it provides soft, glare-free light across the table, encouraging conversation and shared moments. In the living room, Panthella lamps in varying sizes and colours can be arranged together to create a balanced yet lively interior. In the bedroom, the lamp offers calm, functional illumination that supports rest and everyday rituals.
Dining room
Within the dining room, Panthella creates a welcoming setting with gently diffused light distributed evenly over the table surface. Portable editions such as Panthella 160 and Panthella 250 allow the light to be placed precisely where it is needed. Their soft illumination enhances both the meal and the atmosphere around it. Panthella’s distinctive silhouette and considered colour range introduce a sculptural quality, contributing to a timeless expression.
Living room
In living spaces, Panthella can be composed in different scales and finishes to establish a cohesive lighting scheme. Combining several versions allows the light to respond to both quiet evenings and more active use. The Panthella Floor Lamp is frequently positioned within the living area, where its glare-free light and flexible placement help maintain a sense of calm. The palette of colours offers scope for personal interpretation while preserving harmony within the room.
Kitchen
Panthella sits comfortably within the kitchen, delivering even and comfortable illumination across worktops and preparation areas. Its simple form integrates easily with cabinetry and furnishings, whether placed on a sideboard or kitchen island. The robust construction supports longevity, while portable models such as Panthella 160 and Panthella 250 make it straightforward to position light accurately, including beneath wall cupboards. Panthella brings a discreet note of Danish design and practicality into the kitchen environment.
During the 1960s, Louis Poulsen began a collaboration with Verner Panton, whose uncompromising approach to light and form challenged established conventions. Panthella evolved over several years, as Panton explored materials, reflection and colour to achieve a soft, atmospheric quality of light.
The chrome version was particularly close to his vision. The high-lustre chrome-plated finish expresses Verner Panton’s confident and experimental character. At a time defined by more muted interiors, chrome was a deliberate and forward-looking choice, reflecting his willingness to question prevailing norms. Today, the finish has regained relevance as the visual language of the 1970s once again informs contemporary interiors.
When introduced in 1971, Panthella brought together an organic form with distinctive, glare-free illumination. The curved shade and trumpet-shaped base work in dialogue, reflecting light softly and evenly. Panthella is now regarded by many as a modern design icon.
Panthella demonstrates Verner Panton’s ability to unite form, colour and function within a coherent whole. Since 1971, the lamp has remained part of Louis Poulsen’s collection and is today the only Verner Panton design produced by Louis Poulsen.
The Flowerpot lamp, also designed by Verner Panton, is no longer included in the collection, yet it holds recognised status as a modern design icon. Together, Flowerpot and Panthella represent two complementary expressions within Panton’s design universe and underline his enduring influence on Danish design with international reach.
Verner Panton lamps serve not only as practical sources of illumination but also as defining visual elements within an interior. Even when switched off, Panthella’s organic contours and balanced proportions contribute a distinctive graphic presence. Its recognisable form can become a natural focal point, adding character while maintaining an understated elegance.
Verner Panton was a pioneer of Danish design, acknowledged for his assured use of colour, geometry and light. From furniture such as the Cone Chair and the Panton Chair to his innovative lighting designs, Panthella reflects his capacity to combine aesthetics, function and experimentation. His visionary approach continues to influence how light shapes both space and atmosphere.
