Light endows sculpture with life
Designed before the advent of the electric light bulb, Thorvaldsen’s Museum displays its expansive collection of 19th century marble statues using a most variable building material: daylight.
This course will examine Danish architect, Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll’s consciousness of the importance of daylight when he designed Thorvaldsen’s Museum. It will analyze the constructive aspects of using natural lighting in this arena as well as the many challenges.
